I’m a big believer in beer commercials. Some people think they’re obnoxious, loud, or filled with too many funbags for polite company. But to me, that’s the whole point. Beer commercials are fun. And people need more fun in their lives. Well, the latest book from indie publisher Hound Comics is a lot like that. It kinda reminds me of a beer commercial. It’s got a couple hot-bodied little honeys in bikinis. It’s got guns. It’s got blood-spattered zombies, and a whole lot of explosions. And you know what? It’s a hell of a lot of fun.
Killer B*****s of the Zombie Holocaust takes a hot pair of barely-covered babes and puts them quickly in harms way. Pressed into a public bloodsport against their will and given the mandate to survive, Laura and Sarah find themselves fighting a population of zombies beneath a dome covered town.
Details of the unfolding events are sketchy at first, as the first issue serves as a launching point with little explanation. But by the end of this first installment, you’ll have a pretty good idea that a whole lot more is going on than you initially imagined. There’s a mysterious group known as the Elders pulling strings behind the scenes. A possible bounty hunter with a bad attitude and cybernetic implants. And a conspiracy of some kind closing in.
The artwork on KBotZH is pretty solid. The book is mostly in black and white, with occasional bursts of color tossed into the mix. Things like gunshots, blood spatter and explosions all burst off the screen in full color, while the rest of the book is kept in subdued tones. It makes for a nice mix that really helps the squishy bits jump off the page.
The writing didn’t have a whole lot of hooks that grabbed me on this first issue. Like I said, it kind of reminds me of beer commercials. So it mostly came off as a very quick, visceral, in-your-face attempt at fun. Which can be a great thing if that’s what you’re looking for. However, I wouldn’t expect any kind of deep characterization or truly brain tickling moments. KBotZH seems to be more firmly focused on just grabbing your gonads and never letting go.
As an interesting twist, the creators of this comic have set-up a real life twitter account for the characters of this book, and you’ll even find it mentioned in the context of the story. They also made a Facebook page for one of their mysterious characters named “John Parrish,” although it seems to be a bit hard to find given the common nature of the name. So for all you Easter egg hunters out there, you’ve got something new to track down. This level of commitment to making the world of their comic come alive is pretty cool, and I like it when extras like this are added to the mix.
So if you’re in the market for the kind of boob-tastic bloodbath I’ve just described, now you know where to find it. Be sure to check out Killer B*****s of the Zombie Holocaust for all the action you can handle and more.
